At Home Ground Pharmacy, we understand how important it is to use your inhaler correctly to get the full benefit of your medication. Whether you’re a new user or supporting a loved one or child using an inhaler for the first time, mastering proper inhaler technique is essential for managing conditions like asthma or COPD effectively. This guide will walk you through the steps to ensure you’re using your inhaler correctly, helping you or your loved one breathe easier and live more comfortably.
Using an inhaler might seem simple, but incorrect technique can lead to less medication reaching the lungs, reducing its effectiveness. Poor inhaler technique can contribute to poorly managed symptoms, frequent flare-ups, and unnecessary discomfort. Learning the right steps from the start ensures the medication works as intended, providing relief and preventing complications.
If you’re using an inhaler for the first time, these steps will help you get started confidently:
Before using your inhaler, shake it well to ensure the medication is properly mixed. If you’re using the inhaler for the first time, or if it hasn’t been used for a while, you may need to “prime” it by releasing a test spray into the air. Check the instructions provided with your inhaler or speak to your pharmacist for guidance.
Exhale completely to empty your lungs. This step ensures there’s space for the medication to reach deep into your lungs when you inhale.
Hold the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base and fingers on the top. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth, creating a tight seal with your lips. Alternatively, if you’re using an inhaler with a spacer, attach the spacer to the inhaler and place the spacer mouthpiece in your mouth.
Start breathing in slowly and deeply, then press down on the canister to release the medication. Continue inhaling steadily to draw the medication into your lungs. If you’re using a spacer, press the canister first, then breathe in deeply through the spacer.
After inhaling the medication, hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or as long as is comfortable. This allows the medication to settle in your lungs for maximum effectiveness.
After holding your breath, exhale slowly through your nose or mouth. Avoid exhaling into the inhaler or spacer.
If your prescription requires more than one puff, wait 30 seconds to a minute between puffs. Repeat the process for each dose, following the same careful technique.
If your inhaler contains a corticosteroid, rinse your mouth with water after use to prevent potential side effects like oral thrush. Spit the water out—don’t swallow it.
Clean your inhaler and spacer regularly as per the manufacturer’s instructions. This prevents medication build-up and ensures proper functioning. Store your inhaler in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Helping a child or loved one use their inhaler for the first time can feel daunting, but with patience and encouragement, you can make the process stress-free.
Demonstrate the Technique: Show them how to use the inhaler by going through the steps yourself. Visual examples can help build confidence.
Use a Spacer: For children, a spacer can make inhaler use easier and more effective. Younger children may benefit from a spacer with a mask attachment.
Create a Calm Environment: Be reassuring and patient, especially if your child is nervous. Take the time to explain each step and why it’s important.
Practise Together: Allow your child or loved one to practise the technique a few times under your supervision. Praise their efforts to build confidence.
